“What free time?” is what you will most likely hear.
The daily life of a college student can be hectic. From hair-pulling amounts of homework and projects to sorority and frat obligations. There are only 24 hours in a day and for students it can often seem like every waking hour is occupied. But we are not robots. We do need work and play. What students fill those fleeting hours with was my topic of interest today.
Freshman, Ruby Wilsford, is a big fan of writing and going on walks.
“I love walks because I get to be close to nature, plus it gives me a chance to debrief on my day.“
~Ruby Wilsford
Other picks were:
“Watching shows on Netflix/Disney+”
“Always talking, FaceTiming with friends on the phone”
“Arts & crafts/watercolors for my friends”
“3-D printing”
“Basketball”
“Knitting & crocheting”
“Sleep”
“When I do have free time, I love listening to Rotten Mango cases on YouTube and playing Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla.
~Aliyah Harris

Rotten Mango is a podcast style channel, hosted by Stephanie Soo, that focuses on true crime. She is known for her deep dives into high-profile cases and viral mysteries. For hours at a time, she pulls the audience in as fellow detectives. While the dark subject matter covered is certainly not for everyone, her conversational storytelling approach is an obvious draw to her 4.5 million subscribers.
Another current pastime of many that I discovered is Block Blast.

It is a modern, Tetris-like puzzle game where you drag and drop different shapes into a grid. It’s easy to see why such a simple game has become a trendy favorite. We’re all procrastinators at heart, and the addictive, puzzle-solving app gives off the sense of accomplishment every time a brick clicks into place. Also, a sense of failure every time you run of space, prompting you to tell yourself, “Well I can’t end on that note, can I?”
Another curiosity of mine was finding out where around campus do students like to study/hang out at. Freshman, Elise Davis, had some interesting choices as a commuter.
My favorite spot is the TLU library. Main floor. Sometimes the ASC, early in the morning, when there’s not a lot of people. Or in my car, when I don’t feel like talking to people.
~Elise Davis
Some other picks include:
“Tschoepe classrooms/courtyard when the weather is good.”
“Used to be Court St. Coffee, now, Seguin Library.“
“Anywhere but the ASC.”

The hardworking youth of TLU have lots of ways of blowing off steam. It was fascinating to find out what students do when they are not being students. Life can busy at all stages, but it is imperative to find our own personal balance.
Also important to understand, is that it’s okay not to be productive 24/7.
