Campus Involvement Unlocks Personal Opportunity: With Caitlin Wilkie

Caitlin Wilkie has spent the last two years of her college career receiving her education at Texas Lutheran University. Prior to her junior and sophomore years, Wilkie spent her time in Florida before making the big move to Texas.

Caity Wilkie made the big decision to call Texas her new home in the summer of 2022 before entering her junior year. Wilkie had familiar grounds that would help make her move a little easier. Tommy Holmes, Texas Lutherans defensive line coach for the football team happens to be Wilkie’s uncle, this alone had helped create a secure and comfortable move for her.

The Process

Originally from North Palm Beach Florida, Caity spent her first two two years of undergrad at Palm Beach State College, primarily focusing on graduating with a degree in education.

Wilkie states that her transfer process was good and that she was fully acclimated as soon as she got to campus. As that was a fear, being able to adjust easily helped her process feel more comfortable.

” I was really nervous to move across states but having roommates that welcomed me and brought me to extracurricular activities helped me acclimate to the school”

Caitlin Wilkie

With the extracurricular activities that were introduced to Wilkie, she began to become involved with the on-campus organization, one being, Big Dog Endowment. During this time of change for Wilkie, in the Spring semester of 2023, a new step in Caity’s academic career was beginning to take place.

In the spring of 2023, I changed my major to Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship. I knew this was going to be a change but I am really happy with my decision.

Caitlin Wilkie

When discussing this with Wilkie, she states that she again changed her major in the Fall of 2023 to interdisciplinary studies with a focus on Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Education.

As the semesters have gone by, Caity has collected great accomplishments. For example this past January, Wilkie picked up a senior internship position in the SISE department here on campus where she communicates, organizes, and partners with individuals on and off campus. For example, Baltimore Urban Studies; Wilkie plans to bring her passion from TLU to the east coast and partner with the B.U.S to develop a connection between both Baltimore Urban Studies and TLU.

“I want to raise awareness to the ongoing discrimination and racial redlining in urban cities like Baltimore… connecting students to internship opportunities with the B.U.S has been really exciting to do this past semester”

Caitlin Wilkie

Overall, Wilkie’s comfortability helped bring her opportunities that she feels, she would not receive if she was not as involved. As her education and professionalism continue to constantly expand, Caity will take her passions and goals with her to Baltimore this upcoming summer.
